Steve Hobbs Runs to be Washington’s First Asian American in Congress His decision may be altered after the new election district bou ndary ?

Aug 8, 2011 by

Japanese American politician and State Senator Steve Hobbs announced that he will run for the Congress. The decision came out after current Congressperson Jay Inslee, D-Wash., will step down from his state’s 1st District position next year to run for governor.

“We need a representative in Congress who is focused on creating new family-wage jobs,” Hobbs states in the press release. “We must create jobs, invest in our crumbling infrastructure and American businesses, and provide opportunities for our young people.”

Hobbs, a current resident in Lake Stevens, Wash., has been a state senator since 2006 from the 44th District, representing north King and Snohomish County including Everett, Mill Creek, Lake Stevens, Snohomish and Marysville. He hopes to be the first Asian American in Washington to represent in Congress, where only eight Asian Americans are currently serving.

Hobbs serves in the current legislative position as Chair of the influential Financial Institutions, Housing & Insurance, Transportation, Early Learning & K1-12 Education, and Agriculture & Rural Economic Development committees.

“During my time in the State Senate, I learned that working across party lines doesn’t always make one the most popular person,” he states. “I also learned that it’s the right thing to do for the people I serve. This year I helped guide our legislature through passage of the first truly bipartisan, sustainable budget in decades.”

Hobbs has served in the U.S. Army before being elected to the State Senate. He was deployed to Kosovo and Iraq as an infantry officer. He currently serves in the Washington Army National Guard.

According to a report, his decision will depend of how the boundary of the 2012 election is changed later this year. His residence is currently in the 2nd District, which Congressperson Rick Larsen, D-Wash., represents, and Hobbs has no plan to oppose Larsen. At this time, his residence will be likely moved to the 1st District.

Currently Hobbs is endorsed by State Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos, State Senator Paul Shin, former State Rep. Kip Tokuda and other statewide politicans.
